City of Katy to begin improvements to Third Street drainage

Katy residents can expect to see work begin this year on improvements to drainage on Third Street between Airline and Katyland drives.

Katy City Council approved the design and construction of the drainage project at the Feb. 12 meeting with ARKK Engineers at the helm.

Digging in

The project aims to alleviate a number drainage issues along Third Street, including backup issues throughout the city, said David Kasper, ARKK Engineers senior project manager and principal, in an email.

Construction is set to include an enclosed pipe system with a reinforced concrete box culvert to replace the existing large ditch, according to the project proposal from ARKK Engineers.

The project is also set to include:

• Driveway replacements
• Regrading of the right of way, including a shallow ditch for drainage collection
• Removal of the steel guard rail
• Roadway repairs as needed
• Resurfacing of the roadway
• Roadway striping

The project is expected to cost approximately $191,140 with the source of funds being a part of the city’s underground infrastructure budget, according to the proposal.

What’s next

Since the council’s approval, Kasper said the firm has now begun the design process for the project, which is expected to be completed by June.

Construction is expected to begin in September and is estimated to take 10 months, he said.
