Tompkins Junior Earns Perfect Score on ACT

Nicholas Khami, a Junior at Tompkins High School, earned a perfect score on the ACT. Only around two-tenths of one percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. Khami plays on the Katy Cavaliers lacrosse team, and participates in other extracurricular activities. 

An Extremely Rare Accomplishment 

In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2018, only 3,741 out of nearly two million graduates earned a top composite ACT score of 36. 

“Your achievement on the ACT is significant and rare," says ACT CEO Marten Roorda, in a letter to Khami. "Your exceptional scores will provide any college or university with ample evidence of your readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead.”

"I feel like what really prepared me was just taking my classes seriously all through high school," says Khami who is seventeen years old. "I was diligent in all of my classes at all times." The junior only practiced for the ACT for about 10 hours through a free ACT prep website. 

A Lacrosse Player and Volunteer

"I play lacrosse on the Katy Cavaliers High School team and am a volunteer coach for the Cavaliers' seventh and eighth grade team," says Khami. "Lacrosse has had a large positive impact on my life, and I enjoy giving back by facilitating positive lacrosse experiences for younger players." Khami plays the midfielder position. 

A Well-Rounded Student

Khami participates in many extracurricular activities. He's the captain of the Speech and Debate team, and recently earned the title of Academic All American by the National Speech and Debate Association (NSDA). He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and remains involved in Boy Scouts. Khami is also a member of the National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics honor society.

A Love for Computer Engineering

"I want to study computer engineering because I would be continuously facing interesting challenges and learning new skills," says Khami. "I fell in love with the field of computer engineering in second grade when I wrote my first program, and have remained in love to this day."

With his perfect ACT score, Eagle Scout rank and other accomplishments, Khami's future looks bright.  The University of Texas in Austin is a top contender, but he continues to look at his college options.
