Katy ISD board approves $840.6M bond committee recommendation

Katy ISD board members approved a bond recommendation of the Community Bond Advisory Committee, committing to a $840.6 million bond initiative in the July 31 regular board meeting. The board voted 6-1 to call for the bond election, which will appear on the Nov. 7 ballot as four separate propositions. Board Member Morgan Calhoun was the lone dissenting vote.
The details
The bond propositions are broken out by renovation and construction, technology infrastructure improvements, and sports facilities repairs. Approximate amounts of each portion are as follows:
- Proposition A: $723 million
- Four new schools
- 26 campus renovations and expansions
- 84 safety and security upgrades
- New school buses
- Building component replacements
- Proposition B: $84 million
- Classroom technology upgrades
- Campus technology enhancements
- Proposition C: $4 million
- Swimming pool facility repairs
- Component replacements
- Proposition D: $30 million
- District wide athletic facilities improvements
- Rhodes Stadium repairs

Also on the agenda
The board also approved updates to the policies regarding library content and processes put in place to review the texts, both existing and new, per new House Bill 900 regarding sexually explicit and harmful content.
- Requires books reviews be conducted twice per year
- Prohibits the acquisition of library materials that could be deemed inappropriate
- Permits schools to exclude books if they deem them to be harmful in nature, as defined by section 43.24 of the state penal code
