KISD schools recognized for energy conservation, saving district millions

Multiple Katy ISD campuses have earned Energy Star certification by the Environmental Protection Agency. Among these were 19 Katy elementary schools, four junior high schools and Tompkins High School.

According to a KISD press release, efforts by these schools has saved the district over $4 million in what would be energy and water usage, money that can then be redirected to the classroom.

“Through approved bond projects, the Katy ISD Operations Division has been able to install new equipment that is both energy-efficient and more reliable for campuses and district facilities,” said Ted Vierling, chief operations officer for the district, in the press release.

Other methods of conservation by the district include more efficient air conditioning and lighting schedules, technology updates and overnight equipment checks. New facilities in the district are also being built to be energy efficient with LED lights, upgraded control systems and other components. Katy ISD has prioritized energy conservation due to recently rising utilities costs, the press release said.
