Katy, TX, is a charming community just west of Houston and approximately 90 miles from the Texas Gulf Coast. As Lone Star State residents and visitors alike will know, summertime can be intense due to unrelenting high temperatures. The greater Katy area features an abundance of fun options, from arts and culture to unique indoor recreation, making it easy to beat the heat and have a great time. Whether your visit is for an afternoon, the whole day or a weekend, no shortage of fun activities awaits in Katy!

Arts, Culture & Museums in Katy

With an estimated population of approximately 340,000, the greater Katy area punches well above its weight regarding the arts and culture. Four museums are in the immediate vicinity, making the region an incredible draw for families and individuals interested in history.

Art Museum TX (formerly CM Fort Bend) is a first-class facility dedicated to presenting the region’s contemporary art to the public. By showcasing the art of the present and recent past, Art Museum TX strives to encourage a better understanding of modern works. Its hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday.

The Johnny Nelson Katy Heritage Museum is a 9,600-square-foot complex highlighting the region’s agricultural and pioneering history. It houses countless artifacts, antiques and photographs. Admission is free to the museum, which is open Thursday through Sunday.

Katy Veterans Memorial Museum, open Monday through Friday, is a military-themed museum honoring every foreign conflict involving the United States. Admission is free. An additional free museum in Katy is the MKT Railroad Depot Museum & Katy Railroad Park, which preserves the significance of trains. The Depot dates to 1898 and operated as a passenger rail service until 1957.

Katy Heritage Park & Historical Homes is open daily and allows visitors to look closely at some of the city’s turn-of-the-century structures, which the Katy Historical Society purchased and restored.

Exceptional Recreation

In addition to its museums and cultural institutions, the greater Katy area also features various recreational options to create lasting memories that don’t involve being baked by the sun. Typhoon Texas Waterpark is a great way to enjoy a summer day while staying cool in the process. It features giant water slides, a lazy river, tidal wave bay and countless additional attractions for the whole family.

Unique indoor recreational options abound, highlighted by Home Run Dugout, a stand-alone complex with 12 simulated batting bays, a dog park, live music and a complete food and drink menu.

Dig World, TX, is a construction-themed adventure amusement park where kids and adults can safely operate real construction equipment. It features a playground, gem-mining station, turf field with yard games, and educational material provided by Texas A&M’s Department of Construction Science.

Andretti Indoor Karting and Games offers family fun entertainment with its recreation supercenter, featuring a two-level laser tag arena, cutting-edge virtual reality, boutique bowling lanes and premier indoor electric go-kart racing.

Finally, visit PopStroke for an experimental golf and dining experience, leveraging a dynamic, tech-powered golfing environment with tasty eats and drinks. Golf legend Tiger Woods played a hand in designing the facility’s putting courses.

Enjoy Katy’s Parks and Outdoor Spaces

Many of Katy’s public parks are open well into the evening, allowing for outdoor enjoyment outside the hottest hours of the day during summertime. Katy City Park features lighted baseball and softball fields, as well as picnic tables for year-round use. Harvest Plaza, located in the heart of Historic Downtown Katy, provides a shaded structure with night lighting, making it ideal for recreation and relaxation.
