Two additional Katy-area construction projects were approved by Katy City Council at a June 10 meeting.
The details
Katy City Council approved an interlocal agreement with the Katy Development Authority for the Nelson Way extension and bridge construction project, which will connect Pin Oak Road and FM 1463 with an approximately 1,000-foot extension, according to agenda documents.
The four-lane bridge will provide access over the Cane Island Branch of Buffalo Bayou and add concrete sidewalks along both sides of the Nelson Way. The project will also add:
-Curb inlets
-New underground storm sewers
-The project is estimated to cost approximately $3.75 million with the city providing $497,820 in Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County funds, -according to agenda documents. City officials said the Nelson Way project will wrap up by the end of 2025, but a construction start date hasn’t been determined.
Why it matters
With the Texas Department of Transportation’s upcoming I-10 reconstruction from Voss Road to I-45, this extension project will provide residents an alternative route through the city, according to agenda documents.
Also on the agenda
City Council also approved a $342,936 contract with Traf-Tex Inc. to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Pitts Road and Cane Island Parkway.
Ahead of the traffic signal project, city staff added stop signs to the intersection in March to help alleviate resident concerns.
“I want to thank staff for pushing this forward; this intersection has been challenging really since Pitts [Road] was under construction,” council member Dan Smith said. “There was a two-week, two-and-a-half-week period in February where we had three accidents at that intersection.”
The traffic signal is expected to be functional by January and is paid for by METRO funds, officials said.
