Katy ISD recieves "recognized rating from TEA

Despite tougher standards, the Katy Independent School District improved its accountability rating from "acceptable" to "recognized" the second highest state rating.

The good news came Friday when the Texas Education Agency released its 2008 Academic Accountability ratings.

According to the TEA, more schools statewide are rated exemplary and recognized this year. Exemplary ratings went to 43 school districts and 996 schools this year compared to 27 districts and 643 schools in 2007, the release said.

KBR Selects Katy Area for its West Houston Campus Location

KBR announced plans to develop a campus facility near Katy, Texas. The campus will be located off Grand Parkway and Interstate 10 (I-10). KBR has signed an earnest money agreement and intends to enter into a long-term lease for the new facility, which is expected to be just over 910,000 square feet.

Construction under way on various projects in Katy

As the city of Katy continues to attract more families and tourists, new businesses are responding to the population growth, and several construction projects are under way.

A retail center, a new nursing and rehabilitation center and the city's second hotel are expected to open this year.

Plans are also in place to construct more business and professional buildings along the perimeter of Katy Mills mall, a hotspot for commercial growth.

Rooms To Go Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Seaman, along with Waller County Judge Owen Ralston and Katy Area EDC CEO Lance LaCour, announced today that Rooms To Go (RTG) has purchased 118 acres of land along I-10 near the southwest corner of Igloo Road for construction of a 1,200,000 sq. ft. distribution center and 90,000 sq. ft. retail outlet. The Methodist Hospital System will spend $300 million to build a 192-bed hospital in west Houston, hospital executives announced Friday.

The hospital, with an emergency room, open-heart surgery capability and cancer treatment areas, will be on the north side of the Katy Freeway just west of Barker Cypress, Methodist president and CEO Ron Girotto said in a statement.

A new master-planned community in the west Houston area called Bridgeland aims to provide resort-style living to its residents along with an extensive network of trails and lakes.

The 10,000-acre Bridgeland community, located in Cypress 2.5 miles south of U.S. 290 on Fry Road, will ultimately include more than 21,000 single-family homes with 65,000 residents, said Peter Houghton, Bridgeland's vice president for sales.

Texas Children's Hospital West Campus intends to provide a growing community with pediatric medical care in the next few years as well as decades from now.

"We're planning the campus for the future," said Peter Dawson, the hospital's senior vice president of facilities.

The $220-million, 350,000-square-foot hospital will be built on 55 acres at Barker Cypress Road and the Katy Freeway and is expected to be completed by 2010. Construction will begin in early 2008, he said.
