Education

Education K-12

Katy Independent School District (Katy ISD) is well known for its outstanding education system as it has received numerous awards and acclaim for many years. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) rates Katy ISD as a “Recognized” school district over 64 percent of the campuses within the district are rated “Exemplary”, which is the highest level awarded by TEA.

Katy ISD is one of the fastest-growing school districts in Texas with an annual average growth rate of about four percent. According to American Schools and Universities Magazine, Katy ISD is one of the 100 largest school districts in the nation and is the 3rd fastest growing school district in the nation over the past 10 years. In order to plan for and address growth, voters passed a $269,000,000 bond issue in 2006 and in November 2010 a $459,000,000 bond issue was passed for construction of a new high school, new elementary and junior high schools, technology enhancements and existing school maintenance, expansion and upgrades.

Katy ISD’s exceptional instructional quality is guided by a comprehensive district wide curriculum management plan, which coordinates development, delivery and assessment of teaching throughout the district. The district maintains over forty campuses including 26 elementary schools, 10 junior highs, and six high schools.

Career and technology focused education, including a pre-engineering program, is provided by the Miller Career and Technology Center, which underwent a $17 million expansion in 2008-2009. The district provides a highly advanced technology program including one to three computers in each classroom, multiple labs in each school, a technology facilitator assigned to each campus, distance learning capabilities at several campuses, a fiber optic network linking every school and facility and an automated curriculum management plan.

Diverse Recreation

The Katy Area offers abundant recreational opportunities including:

  • Numerous County Parks and four city parks with ball fields, soccer fields, jogging trails, picnic grounds, playgrounds, lakes, ponds and fishing piers, splash parks, and miniature golf. The Katy area is home to the outstanding 20,000+ acre George Bush Park and the Alkek Cycling Velodrome.
  • Youth sports leagues in soccer, swimming, baseball, and football.
  • Four championship golf courses in the Katy Independent School District.
  • Numerous professional sports teams: Houston Astros baseball, Houston Texans football, Houston Rockets basketball, Houston Comets ladies basketball, and the Houston Dynamo soccer team.

Arts, Culture, Museums and Festivals

The Katy Area has two theater companies. The Katy Performing Arts Society (KPAS) presents a variety of professional visual and performing arts to the Katy community through partnerships with local businesses, community organizations and Katy ISD. Through these partnerships, Katy KPAS brings the Houston Symphony, the Houston Grand Opera and the Houston Ballet to Katy for special events and performances that educate the Katy community on the value of the arts, as well as contribute to the benefit of Katy charities. There are three art galleries in the Katy Area and several museums including the Katy Heritage Museum, Veterans Museum and Military Museum. Area festivals and events which occur throughout the year include the Katy Rice Harvest Festival and the Cinco Ranch Triathlon.

Shopping & Dining

Katy boasts one of only three true mixed-use town center developments in the greater Houston metropolitan area, LaCenterra at Cinco Ranch.  Offering uptown style in old town charm, LaCenterra features upscale boutique’s and national names such as Ann Taylor Loft, Eddie Bauer, Talbots, Chico’s and Jos. A. Bank, along with salon services, choice dining options such as Fish City Gril, Kenzo Sushi, Perry’s Steakhouse & Grill, class “A” office space and luxury living.  Katy Mills Mall offers over 1,200,000 sq. ft. of diverse shopping.

Katy Mills features hundreds of the best names in retail including Last Call Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5th, Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, Tommy Hilfiger Company Store and Kenneth Cole.

  • Historic Downtown Katy offers specialty shops, boutiques, and antiques.

  •  The Katy Area has 400 eating and drinking places with over 60 being full-service.

  • The Katy Area has 12 hotels and 10 motels with over 2,700 rooms. Five of these lodging options offer conference facilities.

Healthcare

The Katy Area has recently been named “Medical Center West” for the Greater Houston Area.  Why?  For good reason, Katy’s healthcare options are growing rapidly.  Over the next few years hospitals will invest nearly $800 million in new and expanded facilities.

“I have worked closely with the Katy Area Economic Development Council over the past two years on several development and user projects.  In my opinion, their professionalism, experience, knowledge and access to instantaneous, quality information is second to none.  These attributes have enabled them to become one of top economic development organizations in the Greater Houston area.  These qualities also helped the Katy Area EDC land the 1,000,000 sq. ft., $30,000,000, Rooms to Go Distribution Center, in which Jones Lang LaSalle managed the site selection process.”

“Katy is a great place for plastics manufacturing and distribution.  The strengths for doing business here include access to an available and large world-class workforce, a great transportation system, low cost of living, and an excellent quality of life.”

“We have been seeing a site to build a distribution center over the past year to support our new stores opening in Houston, as well as our stores in San Antonio, Austin, and surrounding states.  Recently, we closed on the 118 acre tract and look forward to beginning construction in the spring of 2008.  The facility will become operational in the fourth quarter of 2009.  We feel confident that this site will satisfy our needs in several respects.”
