May 27, 2011 - Longtime City of Katy resident Bill Lawton was sworn in as council member during a special meeting last Thursday.

He was the lone candidate in the race to represent Ward A. He replaced Kenneth Berger, who reached the term limit for serving on the council.

Lawton said he wants to serve on the council because of the impact the community has made on his life.

“More important than serving on committees and belonging to organizations is the influence that the people of Katy and the ‘spirit’ of the community has been on my life and the lives of my family,” Lawton said. “The feeling of family values is priceless, and our community is envied. None of this is accidental; it is planned and nurtured.

“Going forward, I feel a strong calling to become part of the process that shapes the future of Katy,” he said. “I will bring to the Katy City Council the same qualities that have helped me be successful in all other areas of my life: passion, dedication and integrity.”

Lawton said Katy has helped him and wife Margaret raise their family since 1978. They have resided in their current home since 2004.

“Both of our daughters attended Katy schools from kindergarten through their graduations from Katy High School,” he said. “Throughout their time in those schools, I spent countless hours volunteering with their various organizations working to strengthen the organization and provide opportunities for the students.”

Lawton has been a member of the Katy City Planning and Zoning Commission since 2006 and a member of the Katy Convention and Tourism Bureau since its inception in 2007.

He has also been a member of the First United Methodist Church of Katy since 1978, where he has served on various committees, often as the chair of those committees. He recently retired from the automotive industry, where he served for many years in a variety of management positions.

Lawton said he has high hopes for the future of the city and his term as council member.

“Katy is a wonderful city with an outstanding history,” he said. “Moving into the future, the city must look towards the continuation of healthy business growth with an eye toward strengthening Katy’s business community.”

Incumbents Don Elder Jr. and Fabol Hughes were also sworn in as mayor and council member of Ward B, respectively.
